coverI got the chance to listen to Alim Kamara’s most recent CD, "reciting rainbows" and I was simply impressed by the sophistication that is clear in this CD and of course, his beautiful accent. ;-).  The CD is a 9 song CD which also includes a skit.   In "reciting rainbows" we see the tie to different African regions - Western Africa and Southern Africa.  There are a  couple of things I love about this CD and they are:  the background singers on this CD. They obviously know what they are doing and gave the CD a somewhat soulful tone.  The second thing is the depth of some of the lyrics, for many of us, we’ve come to these conclusions and actually hearing it in music gets us nodding our heads.  Some of the statements are, “I got tired of listening to everyone so now I am listening to me”  (Still),  “ You don’t’ have to be great to get started but you have to get started in order to be great” (We are here), “if silence is the language of the gods, let peace be” (Freedom)”religions are prisons to the seekers of wisdom” (Freedom) and it goes on and on. Also, it is always beautiful to listen to Hip Hop in PROPER English.  He doesn’t revert to the street slang that we hear in a lot of Hip Hop songs. You get to really hear Alim Kamara’s story telling ability in these songs: Freedom and The Servant’s path (there is a video out right now). Of course, I have to mention that this CD is currently free which is a great thing for many of us who love Hip Hop, Alim Kamara or just great music that gets you grooving and thinking simultaneously.
