What Do You Do For A Living?
Reading the CNN article on this issue was a rib cracker. (Just do a google search with this title and CNN). I've often found it fascinating how we as a global society place so much worth on titles and position. We define ourselves on what these titles mean in the world's eye. For example, going to a party you prepare yourself mentally for the inherent - 'so what do you do?'. If your career is a great one, you mention it casually, with class, as if it is nothing as you wait for the woah, big deal , this must be an important person look while those who might not be doing much in the world's estimation - will powder up their titles or what their jobs/careers really entail. A friend of mine actually got tired of all that B.S (her words) and these days, she mentions casually - I work as a phone sex operator, you can find me at the corner street. Basically, she's saying what many will like to say in today's society which is - that you shouldn't try to define her based on a title she has, she is more than a title. She definitely is. She does okay in the world's view.It is quite fascinating to note that in today's society (talking about the U.S here) with today's high rate of unemployment - this question should be really cringe worthy. I wonder what will happen if we start saying stuff like - I'm a brother, sister, fiancee, friend of blah blah, meaning we define ourselves by who we are on the inside or the relationships that we create or have. Now, that will be something wouldn't it?
There are so many bible passages to back these points but won't be using them today. The bible has so many stories of people who were nothing in the world's view but they had something as individuals, something within them that made them 'fishers of men'. Jesus Christ though from a royal lineage was still a carpenter's son and if he didn't step into his ministry he would have remained the son of a carpenter in every one's estimation but it was that something within him that we hold on to. That something was love, care, compassion, empathy and the list goes on. Today, I just ask that we stop with the title branding or title hitting over the head or the what do you do for a living? Ask the person, 'who are you really?". A person who defines themselves just by their career or jobs is a really sad person indeed. Just my opinion and this site should not be held responsible.
